(Carolina Hurricanes/Twitter) WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS A JORDAN MARTINOOK OVERLOAD The Carolina Hurricanes are fresh off an impressive five-game series victory over the New Jersey Devils. The Canes’ success to this point of the postseason is even more unique, considering that the squad is without Teuvo Teravainen, Andrei Svechnikov, and Max Pacioretty. Success in the playoffs requires players to step up and play for one another. Carolina is an excellent example of a team that has been able to stick together and battle each game despite being without the team’s so-called superstars. One player who was instrumental to the Canes’ success in this second round was former Vancouver Giants alumnus Jordan Martinook. Martinook is becoming an unlikely playoff hero for the Hurricanes, which is a similar story from when he began his WHL career. It’s not uncommon for players in the WHL to finish a season with very few points one season and to go on to put up a significant number of points the following year. Jordan Martinook’s two-year stint with the Vancouver Giants is a great example of this. Martinook will be widely remembered for his massive statistical bump in his second season with the Giants. The product of Brandon, Manitoba, recorded 11 goals as a rookie in 2010-11. A season later, he scored 40 and was eventually drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the second round of the NHL Draft. This postseason run is Martinook’s fifth in his career with the Carolina Hurricanes. Martinook, 30, recorded 34 points in 82 games with Carolina this season. He was the Carolina PHWA nominee for the NHL’s Masterton Trophy, which is given annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. Those same traits have been displayed in the postseason with an even bigger spotlight. The forward was also one of just six Hurricanes to play all 82 games, albeit while often playing with bumps and bruises during the year. (Carolina Hurricanes/Twitter) On top of the Masterton Trophy nomination, Martinook also set new career highs in assists, even-strength points (32), and plus/minus (+7). He reached the 30-point plateau for the first time in his NHL career, becoming one of just five players in franchise history to post their first-ever 30-point season after age 30. Martinook has been lights out for Carolina in the playoffs, which has earned him lots of high praise from across the league. In game four, he had a three-point night of a 6-1 triumph over New Jersey. That was his fourth multi-point night of the series, a franchise playoff record, and a feel-good performance from a guy that not many people expected him to have. Martinook assisted on a goal by Jacob Slavin to wrap up the second-round series last night while matching another franchise record. Martinook joined Sebastian Aho and Cory Stillman as the only players in franchise history with a five-game assist streak in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He produced 10 points in five second-round appearances. (Carolina Hurricanes/Twitter) Jordan Staal, Carolina’s Captain, has been a big fan of his teammate and has spoken quite highly of him to the media. Staal says Martinook has been tenacious and hard on pucks, and his work ethic has been bar none. Those are the same qualities that allowed Martinook to stand out in his time with the Vancouver Giants.
Kind of like his first season in the WHL, Martinook had no points in his team’s first-round series against the New York Islanders but started to get rewarded the second time around. Martinook has been fun to watch. He’s proved that anything is possible if you work hard enough. There is still time for him to continue to match and break records, and there is still time for the Vancouver Giants to add him to their Wall of Honour.
