3/5/2023 0 Comments GIANTS CLINCH A PLAYOFF SPOT(Rob Wilton/Vancouver Giants) The heated rivalry between the Vancouver Giants and Victoria Royals had a bit more meaning to it last night with Vancouver only needing a point to clinch a spot in the postseason. Vancouver only trailed the game once, giving up the opening goal to Tanner Scott early on in the first period. The score favored the Royals by one at the end of the first frame.
The second period was impactful for Vancouver as they got goals from Skyler Bruce, Ty Thorpe, and Ty Halaburda at the top, middle, and bottom end of the period. The Royals would cut the deficit to one with a power play marker at the 5:49 mark of the third period, but Carson Haynes sealed the deal with an empty goal and 18 seconds left on the board. The Royals heavily outshot the Giants 36-23, but Brett Mirwald was outstanding between the pipes as he went 34/36. It was a good visit for the Giants who beat the Royals in both weekend matches with 4-2 scores. Multi-point games by Carson Haynes and Jayden Lipinski helped the team clinch their fourth consecutive playoff berth. Vancouver currently has nine games remaining in the regular season which includes three games at home and six on the road. Five of the nine games are against B.C. Division teams (Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George) while the rest are against American teams (Everett, Tri-City, and Portland). Vancouver (24-28-5-2) currently holds down the seventh spot in the Western Conference. The team is eight points back of the sixth-place Tri-City Americans and six points ahead of the Kelowna Rockets who are currently in the final playoff spot. The top eight teams make the postseason from each conference. The Giants aren’t back at the Langley Events Centre until Sunday, March 12, when they host the Cougars for a 4:00 p.m. puck drop. The game will cap off a three-game weekend for the Giants who will then get set for their final three-game weekend of the season the following week. With the Victoria Royals currently out of a playoff position they still have a chance to BE A GIANT.
