(Vancouver Giants/Twitter) Cowabunga! Over three decades ago the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles appeared in a comic book and since then the turtle team has managed to stand the test of time. There have been TV shows, movies, concert tours, and a shocking amount of action figures. Now the franchise can add hockey jerseys to that list. On Friday, the G-men announced their plan to host Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Night. The Giants will wear their best turtle uniforms on Sunday, February 5th, when the team hosts the Tri-City Americans at 4:00 PM. The game is being played in conjunction with RE/MAX, Nickelodeon, and the WHL.
Like the team has done many times, these jerseys will also find their way on the market, allowing fans to bid on their favourite jerseys. The auction will close on Monday, February 6, with proceeds benefiting the BC Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. Although all the Giants will be donning turtle shells, only four would make the TMNT group. Leonardo is the leader of the group and the most disciplined and skilled one too. Jesper Vikman is an unsung hero on the Vancouver Giants roster despite his ability to steal games for his hockey club. Vikman was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, and is listed at 6’3” and 205 lbs. The Vegas Golden Knights prospect has a 3.32 GAA, 0.903 SAV% in 31 games this year. It’s not common for goaltenders to take penalties, so Vikman has his discipline under control. Vikman was also a big reason Vancouver took down the top-seeded Everett Silvertips in the first round of the playoffs last season. Raphael is the most robust and reckless turtle in the bunch. Colton Langkow doesn’t back down against any of his opponents and drops the gloves when needed. From Scottsdale, AZ, Langkow is only one of three Giants players from the USA, making him an outlaw amongst his teammates. In 28 games, the 5’11” and 170 lbs. forward has four goals, two assists for six points, and 71 penalty minutes. Langkow also ranks in the top five for major penalties amongst all players in the WHL with 10. Donatello uses his intellect to invent gadgets and vehicles. No player on the Giants’ roster can create time and space with the puck like Slovakia’s Sam Honzek. Honzek was one Giant who had the chance to participate in the World Junior’s and was invited to join the Kubota CHL Top Prospects Game; he had to miss that event due to an injury. Despite his injury troubles, Honzek has 17 goals and 26 assists for 43 points in 31 regular season games. Michelangelo is the fastest, most agile, and most fun-loving. Giants Captain Ty Thorpe leads his team in points with 24 goals and 26 assists for 50 points in 43 games. His leadership abilities speak for themselves. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are known for taking down their opponents, and the Giants will be looking to do the same. Tickets can be purchased through vancouvergiants.com or at the gate. Giants fans in attendance will also get a chance to get up and close with their team’s players as the Giants will host a Postgame Skate sponsored by Save On Foods.
