(Edmonton Oilers/Twitter) The Edmonton Oilers are the only NHL team featuring two former G-men, making them a popular choice to cheer for amongst Giants fans. Fans of the two teams certainly had to be impressed by the effort given by both players tonight. Evander Kane opened the scoring in game 5 with his third of the playoffs and Brett Kulak would make it a 3-1 lead for the Oilers later on in the frame.
Every year, at the trade deadline, teams look to find a guy like him. A player that is big, strong, and can defend. Kulak brings all that and more to the table. Game 44 will always be a memorable playoff game in Brett Kulak’s career. It’s the game when he would score his first-ever goal in the postseason. Kulak’s goal came in game 44 at the 14:12 mark; it was the fourth goal of the game, the fourth time that he’d made it to the playoffs in his career, and the first game after the first four in the series. Kulak also scored his first NHL goal in his fourth season as a member of the Calgary Flames during the 2017-18 campaign. Brett Kulak is in his second season with his hometown NHL team. He was the second intermission guest on SportsNet with Scott Oake. “Watching the Oilers growing up and now being a part of the team, it’s nice to pop one and just build our lead and help get the momentum back.” Kulak made the playoffs twice as a Hab and has now matched his postseason campaigns as an Oiler. Kulak played three full seasons with the Giants from 2011-2014, and for his efforts, the Calgary Flames selected him in Round 4 of the 2012 draft. Kulak and Kane have both been inducted onto the Giants Wall of Honour. Kulak’s speed makes him a solid mobile defenceman for the Oilers. He’s such a likable guy, and many have noticed his boost in confidence throughout this current series against the Kings. The left-shot defenceman was one of five players that played in all 82 games this season which is the first time he has done that in his NHL career. Kulak also set a career-high in points with three goals and 17 assists for 20 points. “I’m just trying to use my strengths, help the team where I can, and make the most of my shifts. Every shift and play is so important, and you want to be ready for the opportunity and make strong plays for the team.” The hometown boy certainly made the most of his shifts helping Edmonton to a 6-3 victory and a 3-2 series lead. Both clubs get an extra day off before playing game six on Saturday.
