(Vancouver Giants) Tonight, the Montreal Canadiens are in town to take on the Vancouver Canucks. The game is the second season meeting between the two clubs and the only time that Montreal will play in Vancouver this year. The game sees the return of a Vancouver Giants alumni who needs no further introduction. Brendan Gallagher was drafted in the 9th round by the Vancouver Giants in the 2007 WHL Bantam draft. Tonight will mark the 11th time that Gallagher’s Montreal Canadiens will be in Vancouver in his NHL career.
Gallagher knew that he wanted to be a professional hockey player since he was in the fourth grade. It wasn’t skill that would ultimately take Gallagher to the next level, but rather his resilience and fearless traits as a hockey player. His reputation as a fast-skating scorer with energy and aggression has always been a testament to his playing style. Gallagher played with the South Delta Minor Hockey Association before being chosen by the G-men. The right-shot forward began his WHL career in the 2008-09 regular season, where he scored 10 goals and earned 21 assists for 31 points in 52 games. It didn’t take long for him to become a fan favourite with the Giants, and his WHL playing career would last 244 regular season games and 42 post-season matches. Gallagher had worked to prove that Vancouver had made the correct choice in selecting him and to earn the respect and admiration of his team’s fanbase. Brendan Gallagher has his photo next to some of the greatest players and staff affiliated with the Giants. At 5’9”, he is not a big player, but his giant heart and willingness to succeed have always made him a special player. Gallagher began his career a season after the Giants won the Memorial Cup and could never take Vancouver back to that event. Despite missing a Memorial Cup on his resume, he still has many other accolades and achievements in the Western Hockey League. During the 2010-11 season, he received WHL West First All-Star Team honours and became the Vancouver Giants’ all-time leader in goals and points (44-47-91). Internationally, he won a bronze medal with Canada at the 2012 IIHF U20 World Junior Championships. The 2011 season was a big year for Gallagher. He served as the Captain of his team from 2011-2012, picking up 77 points in 54 regular season games and 10 points in six playoff games. The Montreal Canadiens inked him for three years to an NHL entry-level contract on November 16, 2011. The Canadiens drafted Gallagher at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in the 5th round as the 147th overall pick. He has suited up in 660 NHL games since the 2012-13 NHL season. A player who is loved in Montreal and one that has been known to provide a jolt of energy when the Montreal Canadiens need it most. Although Gallagher did suit up in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2021, he will always be loved in Vancouver for his success with his WHL club. Playing in Vancouver has always been special for him as he has family residing in the city, but the lone game in Vancouver each season also allows him to connect with fans and members of his junior team. It’s safe to say that those same fans will be rooting for him when he gets suited up at Rogers Arena.
